Why do my windows still look dirty after I clean them?
Updated October 19, 2026
If glass still looks dirty right after you've cleaned it, the problem usually isn't effort. It's one of six things: cleaning residue left on the glass, dirt on the side you didn't clean, mineral deposits ordinary cleaner won't lift, etching or scratches that are damage rather than dirt, haze between the panes of a double-pane window, or dirty screens and frames that make the view look dull. A quick test tells you which one you have, and some of them can't be fixed by cleaning at all.
The two-minute test
- Find the side. Clean a small square on the inside. If the haze is still there, clean the same square on the outside. If it's still there after both, it isn't on either surface you can reach.
- Look at an angle. View the glass with light coming through it at a low angle. Residue shows as streaks and smears; deposits show as spots or rings.
- Try the fingernail test. Run a fingernail lightly across a mark on clean, dry glass. A mark that catches your nail is deeper than surface cleaning can fix, as GT Tools explains.
What's causing it
| What you notice | Likely cause | Can cleaning fix it? |
|---|---|---|
| Streaks or a smeary film that shows in sunlight | Leftover cleaner, soap or dirt spread by a cloth | Yes. Use less product and a clean squeegee. |
| It disappears when you clean the other side | Dirt on the side you skipped, usually the outside | Yes |
| White spots or rings that won't wipe off | Hard-water mineral deposits | Usually, with a dedicated remover |
| Cloudiness or pitting that stays when the glass is clean and dry | Etching from long-term mineral or chemical exposure | No. It's damage to the glass. |
| Fine lines that catch a fingernail | Scratches | No |
| Fog or haze that won't come off either side | Moisture between the panes of a double-pane window | No. The seal has failed. |
| The view looks dull or grey, but the glass seems clean | Dirty screens, frames or interior film | Yes, by cleaning those |

Residue and streaks
The most common cause. Too much cleaner leaves a film, and dirty cloths move grime around. Tom's Guide notes leftover soap is often why streaks remain. Our guide to cleaning windows without streaks covers how to diagnose and fix each kind.
The other side
Most people clean the inside more often, so the outside builds up dust, pollen and rain spots. If the glass looks hazy from the sofa, the outside is the usual suspect.
Hard-water deposits
Sprinklers and rain running off the roof leave minerals that dry onto glass as spots. Light deposits may come off with a vinegar solution on uncoated glass; heavier ones need a glass-safe mineral remover. Test any product on a small area first, as Vitro and Cardinal both recommend, and check whether your glass has a coating that limits what you can use. Vitro warns that runoff left on glass can cause permanent staining or damage, so deal with it early.
Etching and scratches
When mineral deposits are left long enough, they can damage the glass surface. GT Tools describes etching as cloudiness or pitting that stays after the glass is clean and dry, and says it's damage in the glass, not a deposit on top of it, so harder scrubbing won't help. The same goes for scratches. Professional glass restoration or replacement are the options. Scraping or abrasive cleaners make things worse; Andersen, Cardinal and Vitro all advise against them.
Fog between the panes
If a double-pane window has haze or droplets that won't wipe off either side, the moisture is inside the sealed unit. Tarion notes that condensation between panes means the edge seal is broken. The glass unit needs repair or replacement; check your window warranty first.
Screens and frames
A dusty screen in front of clean glass makes the whole view look grey. Dirty frames and sills do the same at the edges. Wash or vacuum screens and wipe frames when you do a full clean.
Stop it coming back
- Clean on a cloudy day or in shade, and use only a little cleaner.
- Clean both sides on a regular schedule, not just the inside.
- Aim sprinklers away from the glass and deal with mineral spots before they build up.
- Keep cloths for glass only, and wash them without fabric softener, which can leave residue.
Regular light cleaning is what stops buildup turning into a problem. See how often to clean your windows for a schedule. On large, smooth glass, an automated window cleaning system such as the Window Washing Robot can handle that routine cleaning, though it's made for everyday dirt and won't remove mineral deposits, paint or adhesive.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my windows look cloudy even after cleaning?
The usual causes are cleaning residue, dirt on the other side of the glass, hard-water deposits, etching, or moisture trapped between the panes of a double-pane window. Clean a small square on each side to find which side the problem is on, then check whether the cloudiness stays when the glass is clean and dry.
How do I know if my windows are etched?
Etching shows as cloudiness or pitting that stays after the glass is clean and dry. If a mark catches your fingernail, it's deeper than surface cleaning can fix. Etching is damage to the glass, so harder scrubbing won't remove it.
Can hard water stains on windows be removed?
Surface deposits usually can, with a vinegar solution on uncoated glass or a glass-safe mineral remover for heavier buildup. Test on a small area first and check for coatings. Deposits left for a long time can etch the glass, and etching can't be cleaned off.
Why is there fog between my window panes?
Fog or droplets between the panes of a double-pane window mean the seal around the glass unit has failed and moisture has got in. It can't be cleaned from either side. The glass unit needs repair or replacement, so check your window warranty.
Why do my windows look dirty when the sun shines on them?
Low sunlight shows thin residue, streaks and fine dust that are invisible in flat light. Use less cleaner, remove it fully with a squeegee or dry microfiber, and check your work with light coming through the glass.
Glass that still looks dirty after cleaning is usually telling you something specific. Residue, the other side and mineral deposits can be cleaned. Etching, scratches and fog between panes can't, and need a glass professional. Test before you scrub harder, because the wrong fix can make the damage worse.
